FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is waxing?
Waxing is a hair-removal technique that pulls hair out from the root. Waxing can last anywhere from 3-6 weeks and is a very popular form of hair-removal.
What kind of wax does La Tira use?
At La Tira Wax Studio, we use a combination of strip wax and hard wax. On the bikini area, we ONLY use hard wax. Hard wax is typically also used for facial waxing and underarm waxing. Strip wax will be used for areas such as legs, arms, & backs.
What is the difference between soft wax and hard wax?
Strip wax, or "soft wax" is a type of wax that requires a cotton strip to remove the wax and hair. Soft wax is generally used on flat areas of the body such as the legs and arms. Occasionally soft wax will be used on the brows or upper lip if the hair in that area is very fine. Permission will always be asked before using the soft wax on the facial or bikini area. Strip-less, or "hard wax" is a type of wax that, when applied, hardens on its own. The wax becomes the strip itself and a cotton strip is not necessary. Hard wax is generally much better for sensitive skin, and is used on the facial and bikini areas.
How long do I have to let my hair grow?
We suggest letting your hair grow for at least two weeks time, or at least 1/4 in. thick (1/2 in. preferably). If you have been shaving regularly, it is recommended that you let your hair grow at least 3 weeks to allow all the different layers of hair to come above the surface of the skin.
Should I trim my hair?
No! If your hair needs trimming before a wax, your esthetician will do so. Oftentimes, trimming at home can take too much hair off and the hair is no longer long enough to wax.
Does it hurt?
It depends on your skin type, coarseness of hair, and pain tolerance. For those who are waxing for the first time, yes, it will most likely be uncomfortable. Some areas (ie. bikini & upper lip) hurt more than other areas. Waxing regularly (every 4-6 weeks) will dramatically reduce the discomfort you feel. At La Tira Wax Studio, we want to give you the best experience possible. We provide tattoo-grade numbing spray for you to use immediately before your appointment to minimize sensitivity. There are also products on the market that you can purchase to use 1 hour before your appointment that will help minimize pain as well. You may also take a pain-reliever before your appointment to minimize pain.
Will waxing make my hair grow back thicker and darker?
Contrary to popular waxing myth, hair does not grow back thicker and darker after being waxed. Waxing actually weakens hair follicles making hair grow back thinner and slower. In fact, many clients will notice that after years of consistent waxing, hair in certain areas does not grow back at all.
Will medication affect waxing?
Yes, it absolutely will. You may NOT be waxed if you are taking any antibiotics, Accutane, Differin, Retin A, or any medication that lists "sun-sensitivity" as a possible symptom. These medications can often thin out and weaken your skin making you more sensitive. You should wait 2-6 weeks depending on how long you have been on the medication before you wax to ensure a safe waxing experience. Additionally, you should not wax if you have had a medical-grade facial or peel within the week before waxing.
I am pregnant, can I still get waxed?
Yes absolutely! Whether you are in early stages of a pregnancy or right at your due date, it is safe to wax during your pregnancy. If you are in the first or second trimester of your pregnancy, please let your esthetician know so she can use products that do not contain any acids (glycolic, salicylic, etc.). Please also be aware that waxing during pregnancy can be more uncomfortable and painful. Taking a pregnancy-safe pain reliever one hour before waxing can help significantly. We also offer additional pillows for your comfort upon request.
Is there a minimum age requirement for waxing at La Tira Wax Studio? (With or without parental accompaniment?)
Without parental accompaniment, the minimum age for non-bikini waxing (ie. underarms, brows, legs, etc.) is 16 years old. Bikini waxing cannot be performed on minors (under 18) without parental accompaniment. If a parent accompanies a minor to the studio, there is no minimum age requirement for any waxing service. Parent must review and sign Waxing Consent Form on behalf of minor and be present in the room at all times during the service.
Is La Tira Wax Studio child & baby-friendly?
Our treatment rooms are on the smaller side, so unfortunately strollers are not permitted in the treatment rooms. If your baby or infant is in a carrier that is attached to a stroller, you are more than welcome to bring the carrier into the treatment room at your own discretion, however bringing infants to appointments longer than 30 mins is generally not recommended. If your child is between the ages of 1-8, we recommend making other arrangements for child care when you come in for your appointment. For the safety of your child and our staff, we ask they do not accompany you to your appointment. There are heavy pieces of furniture and delicate pieces of glass throughout the studio, which could be potentially harmful to toddlers and younger children.
